Its a very rare occasion when I am 'not too hungry', but it was just one of those days. So my friends and I went out in search for a place that would serve us some simple cafe style food. A friend suggested a new place on 100 ft Road called Huckleberry and I was all game.
Liked the place from the moment we entered it (okay maybe after I finished climbing the steep flight of stairs), there were quirky half finished bucket stools with a few tables kept outside, and a fair sized L shaped seating area. I always love a place with a 'Specials Menu' and a wood fired oven and I had already warmed up to Huckleberry. Dont expect a classy ambience - more fun, relaxed and a bit quirky.
Did a quick loometer (thats what I call my Clean Loo Guide) and after being happy with what I saw, I was happy to sit down and scour the menu. Well the menu reading didnt take too long considering the fact that its fairly limited. Wines, Beverages, Appetizers, Pizzas and Desserts are the only thing on the permanent menu. The Specials Menu has other things like Soups, Pastas and Sandwiches.
So even though we were barely hungry we ordered a bit of each.... (Did you seriously expect me not to eat at a new place?)
We started off with the Carrot Coriander Soup. It was a decent start. It was a flavourful soup with a beautiful distinct coriander taste. My only issues, it started getting a little peppery after a few sips and it looked like the cream in it had split slightly.
We went on and called for 2 starters - Roasted Mushrooms and a type of Grilled Garlic Prawns. The Mushrooms were great and I was thankful that I got a chance to click a few photos before they were wolfed down. The Prawns werent bad either - just not the most memorable.
We called for two mains (if you were wondering by now how many people we were - we were 4 half hungry people - well you will see very soon how much we can eat when we are 'full hungry'). Our Spinach and Goat Cheese Pizza and Pulled Chicken Sandwich arrived soon after the appetizers. The Pizza was a hit, the Pulled Chicken Sandwich a massive miss. So when you think of a pulled chicken sandwich , you assume its going to be a modifed version of a pulled pork sandwich which is typically pork slow cooked till the meat is ready to fall off and the flesh pulled off into stringy pieces of heaven usually loaded with a nice sauce to make the sandwich juicy and dripping with delight. What we got instead were chopped pieces of chicken in a mayo kind of sauce....I think the Chicken Junglee Sandwich on Indigo Airlines is better than that. But the Pizza more than made up for the sandwich disaster. A good thin crust pizza with generous toppings - this was definately the star of the evening.
By this time you'd think that us half hungry people must have been stuffed, but when your out with my friend Varun or my husband Sumit, no meal is complete without dessert and even though the Dessert menu didnt look fantastic, we ended up ordering a Chocolate mousse kind of a dessert. Im sure the picture itself will give you an idea that the restaurants pastry chef was either pissed off or not in town or maybe the concept doesnt exist in Huckleberry.
Overall despite its misses, Huckleberry seems like a nice casual restaurant. The service was fairly efficient and we didnt really face any issues with them. Come here if your in a mood for a good pizza, or are looking for a relaxed atmosphere to chill out in. The restaurant has been open for only a couple of months now. They are open all day through, but dont serve pizzas between lunch and dinner. Will I be Back? Maybe when my next Pizza craving hits me (which happens every week).
